EOGHAN O’CONNELL MAKING GREAT STRIDES AT CELTIC

August 13 2016: Former Avondale player, Eoghan O’Connell, celebrates his birthday by playing for Celtic against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup at Thomond Park on Saturday. Eoghan, who joined Glasgow Celtic in 2011 at the age of 16, moved through the Celtic Youth Academy before making his senior debut in 2014. The following season began brightly with a few appearances before injuries halted his progress. This season, with the arrival of new boss Brendan Rodgers, Eoghan has made a great start. He scored a cracking goal in a pre-season game against Leicester - see the goal here - and has stayed in the team ever since. Best wishes for the season and happy birthday from all at Avondale.

LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

June 3 2016: Avondale faced down UCC as they sought out revenge for UCC's controversial league win over the Dale in 2014. Dave Warren led his troops into action against Noel Healy's students knowing a draw was enough for the Dale to take the league title. While UCC controlled the early possession Avondale arguably created the better of the early chances with Roy Long looking dangerous throughout. Avondales' pressure led to a succession of corners but they failed to capitalise on this and UCC almost stole the lead when a Sean McLaughlin header was stopped by the feet of O'Leary in goal for the Dale.

The breakthrough came on the stroke of half time when a long throw from Comerford was headed home by Long to give the home side a half time lead. The second half started at breakneck speed with tackles coming thick and fast but referee Keith Calnan and his assistants controlled the action calmly. Comerford again provided the opening on 65 minutes which led to Roy Long blasting in from close range for his second goal of the evening. While UCC continued to press, Avondale's experience showed as their midfield and back four held firm. Comerford got himself on the score sheet to seal the win and the title on 79 minutes as he converted a penalty.

Huge congratulations to the team, coaching staff and all involved with the club.
